Filipino
Filipino 1 - College Prep
Credits: 10 credits total (5 credits per quarter)
Grade 9 - 12
Meets UC/CSU Requirements: Area "E"
This course involves an introduction to the Filipino language as a tool for communication in simple social situations. Emphases are on developing the four language skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. However, the course will focus on Speaking and Listening skills as foundation in the beginner's program. The course will pay close attention to the sounds of the Filipino language, including intonation and stress, as well as vocabulary and simple grammatical structures.
Filipino 2 - College Prep
Credits: 10 credits total (5 credits per quarter)

Meets UC/CSU Requirements: Area "E"
This class is a continuation of Filipino 1. Emphases are on developing the four language skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. The course will focus on speaking and listening as foundational skills. The course will pay close attention to the sounds of the Filipino (Tagalog) language, including intonation and stress, as well as vocabulary and grammatical structures of the elementary level.

The goal of this course is to enable students to increase their proficiency in Filipino to the intermediate-high level. While speaking and listening comprehension will be stressed, training in reading and writing Filipino will be an integral part of instruction. Students will be introduced to traditional folktales from the Philippines as well as several well-known works of contemporary Philippine literature.

Spanish 1 - College Prep

Spanish 1 introduces students to the four basic language skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, within a cultural context.. Course assignments include a variety of activities such as creating dialogues, poems and cultural projects in Spanish. Evaluation is based on daily participation, homework completion, tests, quizzes, projects and presentations.
Spanish 2 - College Prep
Credits: 10 credits total (5 credits per quarter)

Prerequisites: Passing Grade in Spanish 1

This is an intermediate language course. It is designed to build on the communication skills learned in Spanish 1. Students continue to develop vocabulary skills and use increasingly complex language structures in listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. The course continues to explore of the cultures and history of
Spanish-speaking countries continues.give students more detailed knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. Evaluation is based on daily participation, homework completion, tests, quizzes, projects and presentations.
Spanish 3 - College Prep

This course is designed to expand the student’s vocabulary as well as providing further practice in academic reading and writing in Spanish. Special emphasis is placed on grammar practice and reinforcement of concepts introduced in Spanish 2. This course provides the student an opportunity to take a third year of an advanced language course (favored by the CSU/UC system) or as a bridge to continuing on to AP Spanish.
Spanish 4 - College Prep

Spanish 4 will align with AP themes. Each thematic unit will explore essential questions through a variety of authentic texts, including videos, audio, articles, blogs, comics, interviews and literature written by and for native Spanish speakers. Students will understand the main idea and supporting details of spoken language that incorporates familiar vocabulary and structures and respond appropriately. Students will understand selected written materials on various topics. Students will apply knowledge of Spanish pronunciation and intonation patterns in various situations. Students will respond to statements or questions in Spanish; write compositions and conversations on selected topics, which incorporate description, detail and accurate grammatical structures. Students will explain how aspects of the Spanish-speaking culture differ from their own and discuss the influence of the Spanish-speaking culture in the global community.
Spanish for Spanish Speakers
Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1 - College Prep

Spanish for Spanish Speakers is designed specifically for speakers of Spanish who already have some degree of language proficiency. The purpose of this course is to enable students whose heritage language is Spanish to develop, maintain, and enhance proficiency in Spanish by providing them the opportunity to listen, speak, read, and write in a variety of contexts and for a variety of audiences. Spanish for Spanish Speakers will allow students to explore the cultures of the Hispanic World including their own. It will also provide students with the opportunity to read and write in Spanish for academic purposes.
Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2 - College Prep

This course develops and expands upon the skills learned in Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2, aiming for higher levels of fluency and literacy. The course focuses on the development of advanced communicative competence in all modes of communication, as well as on understanding Hispanic cultures and issues of identity. Students will continue to develop awareness and understanding of Hispanic cultures, including language variation, customs, geography, history, and current events. Students will continue to improve their writing skills, using Spanish in increasingly complex ways to express thoughts on social and academic themes.
Advanced Placement Spanish Language
Credits: 10 credits total (5 credits per quarter)

AP Spanish Language and Culture is equivalent to an intermediate level college course in Spanish. Students cultivate their understanding of Spanish language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and communities, personal and public identities, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges.The course prepares students to take the AP exam in May.. Summer work may be a requirement of this course.

Spanish Literature and Film - College Prep

Spanish Language & History Through Literature & Film is a language course designed for students who have taken Spanish 1 and 2 or Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1.s.This course reinforces and strengthens students’ ability to discuss, read, and write in Spanish through the analysis of Spanish Language film and literature. This course will allow students to continue developing their Spanish language skills while also working to master new concepts in Spanish. The course will continue to expand their understanding of grammar and introduce them to new vocabulary. These skills will be developed through an exploration of historic events in the Spanish-speaking world as they explore readings and film. The focus on history will work to enhance the students’ knowledge of the cultural diversity and historical complexity of the Spanish-speaking world. The emphasis on improvement of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills will be considerable, and the student will be required to create presentations, analyze films, read literature and history documents, and write analytical essays in Spanish using the readings and material that were presented in class. To show understanding, students will create a presentation, take an exam and write an essay at the end of each unit. To enhance their grammar skills students will write extended paragraphs as well as analytical essays and other various forms of writing, showcasing the vocabulary and verb tenses introduced and practiced in this course. By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate an expanded understanding of Spanish grammar and vocabulary while also showing insight into important historical and cultural events throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
