STUDENTS IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT 2007

City of Daly City
/ Jefferson Union High School District
Each year the city of Daly City and the Jefferson
Union High School District join together to present a unique learning
opportunity for young people in our community. The Students in Local
Government program allows students to learn first hand how city government
operates and the role individual city departments play in the overall process of
governing a modern city at the beginning of the 21st century.
The program begins with a meeting of the participating students to
gain some background knowledge of how local government works and to identify
issues in the community of importance. A series of field trips helps students
understand the actual workings of city government. Trips include everything from
touring the Wastewater Treatment Plant, SeniorCenter, corporate work yard,
fire stations, to a complete tour of city hall. The culminating exercise in this
program is a mock city council meeting. At this meeting, which students run from
“gavel to gavel,” each of the department heads’ meeting agenda items are
presented to the city council for consideration and action. The meeting is held
in the actual council chambers and is video taped for later broadcast via local
cable access throughout the community.
